What varies between a club pitch, a school strip and a backyard net is not really the turf. It is the base underneath, the length of surface you build, and how much traffic it has to take.

Confirm dimensions with your association before building a club pitch. The Laws set the pitch, but competition regulations and junior formats use shorter pitch lengths by age group, and a club installing one surface for multiple grades needs to know which distances it has to serve.

Choosing the Right Pitch for Your Setting

The specification follows the traffic, not the ambition. A club, a school and a backyard rarely need the same build even when the finished surface looks similar.

Schools are the setting most often overspecified in one direction and underspecified in another. A school strip rarely needs club pace, but it takes far more foot traffic than a club pitch does, because it gets used at every break as well as in PE. Clubs should decide the multi-use question early. If the surface will also serve training, junior formats or general recreation, that changes both the width built and the turf selected. Ask for the base to be itemised. On a cricket pitch more than almost any other synthetic surface, a cheaper quote usually means a shallower base, and a shallower base shows up as inconsistent bounce within a couple of seasons. That is the specification to compare, not the turf brand.

The decision usually comes down to volume, not preference. A club that needs the surface used six days a week across juniors, seniors and training cannot get that out of a turf wicket without a curator and a recovery schedule. A club with one graded turf table and the resources to prepare it has a genuine reason to keep it.

Neither is automatically better cricket. Turf wickets change through a match in ways that are part of the game at higher grades. Synthetic surfaces trade that variation for availability, which is exactly the right trade for most community and school cricket.

  1. Site assessment. Existing ground, available dimensions, orientation, drainage, access and intended use. Underground services are located before any excavation.
  2. Design and setout. Pitch orientation, total surface length including run-ups, width, and any line marking. Orientation matters more than people expect, since bowling into a low sun is a genuine problem on a fixed pitch.
