What Makes a Synthetic Putting Green Perform?

The complete system, in this order: base, contours, turf, infill. A premium turf over a poor base will play inconsistently. A well-built base under a mid-range turf will surprise people.

  • A compacted, free-draining base built in layers. A coarse layer for structure, a fine screening layer on top that can be shaped and screeded. Compacting a single deep lift firms the top and leaves the bottom loose, which is how soft spots appear six months later.
  • Contours shaped into the base, not the turf. The breaks a ball reads are cut into the fine layer before anything is laid.
  • Consistent pile direction. Every piece on a green must run the same way. A section laid against the grain rolls differently from the rest and cannot be corrected afterwards.
  • Joins that are invisible to the ball. Not just to the eye. A finished seam should be tested by rolling a ball across it from several angles.
  • Cups set flush with the surface. A cup sitting proud rejects good putts, and one sitting low collects water.
  • Infill brushed in evenly. On a green the infill also affects speed, so it goes in gradually rather than all at once.
  • Secure perimeter edging. Keeps the turf tight and the edge clean where the green meets paving or a garden bed.

Green speed is not a specification you order. It is a result of pile, infill level, contour and how the surface is maintained, which is why a good installer will ask how you play before recommending anything rather than quoting a number off a chart.

What Is Involved in the Installation?

Think about where the water goes, not just that it leaves. Re-grading part of a backyard changes how the whole yard sheds water. Central Coast Council is explicit that owners must not divert, redirect or concentrate stormwater from its natural path onto neighbouring properties, and that anyone creating a hardstand area has to control the runoff it produces. If the site already holds water after rain, that gets solved at the excavation stage, because there is no fixing it once the turf is down.

A small flat green with one cup is a realistic DIY project. If you are comfortable with excavation, compaction and cutting turf accurately, and you are honest about the tools you have, it can be done well over a couple of weekends.

How Do You Maintain a Synthetic Putting Green?

A green needs less than a natural one and more than a lawn, because anything on the surface changes how a ball behaves.

  • Clear leaves and debris regularly. A single gum leaf on a putting line will move a ball off it.
  • Brush the pile along the lines people putt from and around the cups, where fibres flatten first.
  • Top up infill where you can see it has thinned or migrated, particularly around cups.
